They knew they were being hypocritical, so they were reluctant to even divulge the fact that other cloud providers have already been doing it; they wanted to position themselves as the pioneer. I can't imagine how they thought this would go well. It's another example of Apple being stuck in an echo chamber and not being able to objectively assess how their actions will be perceived. How many times have they made product and PR blunders like this?
