MinIO – the smartphone camera of object storage
- killingtime74 5y agoYou know why it’s pulled so much? CI pulling it for integration testing. It’s not the smart phone camera of object storage, it’s the photo of a model family you get when you buy a picture frame
- jitl 5y agoWhat is the value proposition here? Why should I use this instead of AWS? Something something, on premise? This reads like a GPT3 generated advertisement.
- 2Gkashmiri 5y agoI could be wrong but imagine buying cheap server space from multiple providers like ovh, linode and plonking minio. That way you get distributed storage without being stuck with one provider like aws or b2. That's it I think, or as you said selfhosting
- ckdarby 5y agoCost cutting & latency reduction on AWS S3. There is also abstraction where you're interfacing with MinIO and don't care if it is GPC, Oracle, Azure, AWS, etc behind it. Granted k8s has been making progress with this as well.
- selfhoster11 5y agoIf you want simple, on-premise S3 compatible storage system and you are happy to take the ops and maintenance upon yourself, it's perfect. Lots of software is S3 compliant, so pointing it at a different server is usually all it takes to connect to Minio.
- WhyNotHugo 5y agoIt's super userful for local development. When I run my apps locally, I run a local postgres, local redis and minio as a local s3. It also works well for applications that you need to run in the local network (for example, in regions with slow or unreliable internet connections).
- IfOnlyYouKnew 5y agoThis guy is annoying even when filtered through an article summarizing him. Although “MinIO is Hotel California without strings” is so audaciously insane a statement, it has my respect. (Because the strings-you can check in but never leave-are just about the sum total Hotel California’s identity)
- onionisafruit 5y agoI came to the comments to read people shitting on minio; can’t get enough of that. But you made me read the article.
