That's not only in Europe. I live in Mexico, but in a huge city of millions of people. Guess what, most of the fruits and vegetables are terrible, even from the street markets. Turns out if it's a city of millions you need an industrial scale agriculture and logistics. So yes, the fruits/vegetables are picked green and are tasteless. To get something more tasteful I have to escape to a much smaller place.
