The safest and most straight forward is to use an umbrella company. I have friends who work for SV companies (they actually relocated from SV to overseas) in both Europe and Japan. This was the solution they chose and it works. The overhead costs are less than what the employer would usually pay for US payroll and health insurance, so the deal basically worked out that their foreign pre-tax salary through the umbrella company is what it was back in California.
