The main benefits from being a digital native are not knowing computers, but the results. Which might only be because they are more pronounced in the young -
ie. Less drink driving accidents (Uber), they commit less sex crimes (Access to Adult material), access to heath information.
What is interesting is they are kinda the first generation with IQ's less than their parents in a hundred years. This would not be expected given they are living more abstracted lives.
This is where the article fails. Digital native should have more abstract minds and learn abstract things quicker. Not automatically know them. That's a curriculum fail. If they are failing to learn abstract ideas at the speed of digital immigrants (their parents) then there's a problem. That's what the IQ drop implies but the article doesn't seem to indicate either way.
- nextlevelwizard 5y agoTo me whole notion of diginative-ism is that you don't need people to teach you how to use every program. You should have certain level of understanding how programs are usually structured and where some option might be hiding and you are confident enough using computers that you aren't afraid to poke around and figure it out for yourself.
- secondaryacct 5y agoNo, native really just mean born after. It implies they never knew a world without the internet or computers, but they can still be absolute morons.
- nextlevelwizard 5y agoThen the term is just as meaningless and useless as "millenial"
- aaron695 5y agoGiven you can't even bold text on Facebook messenger (or HN), the idea Natives know any word processing isn't a very logical assumption from the "Myths of the Digital Native" article. Most of Digital Native's apps are very primitive, you can even look at technology sites like HN and see the fear of change in current messenger apps. "Different kinds of experiences lead to different brain structures" - was in the original Digital Natives article, it was a very low level concept. And the evidence around brain structures or ways of thinking is not in the positive direction so far.
