Interesting idea, though I think it would compete with sites like Goodreads and Amazon's mountain of reviews.
I'm reading Why Nations Fail right now and checked for any reviews. The search populates titles well enough though I don't think I could tell from the search screen whether or not something had any reviews. Checking another recent read (Cult of the Dead Cow) I tapped the 'yes' button for just the summary by accident and noticed that there wasn't any form of undo. Refreshing the page also gave the scores as 66%-33% with 1 vote. I guess the initial value is set to one vote each to have it read as 50:50.
If you wanted to take this further being able to see a summary of the book on the vote screen would be very helpful. If the database grew out having a ranked list of worthwhile reads would also be nice on the front page. As it stands it's a fun idea, I'd send it along to groups like reddit.com/r/books and see if anyone's interested in it.
- nimfe 5y agoThanks for the thoughtful suggestions on how to improve the service! I agree the service is limited without the large number of reviews of Amazon and Goodreads. One way to overcome this is to use these existing reviews as a prior (which would be more informative than the current uniform prior of 1 vote each).
