Few years from now, most people would be totally okay with Apple letting random governments coerce them into putting “illegal” non CP related photos to their database in the name of “national security” or what not. All it takes is one tragedy for the population to give up their principles and rights in the name of tiny bit of “safety”.
Just a decade ago, freedom of speech used to be something most people would fight for even for things they opposed and found offensive. Now a days, people make excuses why companies coerced by governments are totally fine with censorship because “it’s just a private company”. “It’s a private company” principle is how censorship is done in authoritarian countries too- private companies simply do the job of the governments.
I have zero hope for the future of free internet. Soon journalists like Julian Assange and whistleblowers like Snowden would be even easier to shut down and track down in the name of “national security” which Apple has made easier to do.
