The latest on Elastic’s stance on open source
- tluyben2 5y agoBut is the problem not different? You can make millions and probably billions with open source (viral or non viral) but often not enough if you have VCs or public shareholders. If Elastic were bootstrapped and just looking to be a healthy company open source works: investors and public companies are looking for multipliers and that is an issue. For that you need to have the security that you won't be copied fast and you have to make sure that they come for you for support. There are not many companies that can show the invested side to work without dropping a lot of the open source philosophy. And many newer companies have it built in: you can get the source but you cannot really do anything meaningful with it. So it is more gimmick to attract first movers cheaply.
