This has not been my experience. First, I work on lots of code bases and this is where a lot of the brittleness comes from. They don’t use the same versions of the same things. Second, C dependencies are a giant pain in the ass when you add the first problem above.
- cat199 5y agoMeanwhile, on BSD UNIX derivatives, I can 'make world' since the dawn of time...
- jshen 5y agoAh yes, then there is the third big complexity. Some devs are on Mac, some windows, some Linux, and a few rare people on BSD.
- remram 5y agoYou still have to grab the dependencies before running make, some of which you'll grab from apt/yum/chocolatey/macports, some you'll need to compile manually and put in a platform-dependent location, ... Then you can run `make world`. Of course, BSD make is not completely compatible with GNU make...
- umanwizard 5y agoOpenBSD and FreeBSD at least can compile themselves from /usr/src on a default install, fresh out of the box with zero additional packages.
- remram 5y ago"It can compile on a single platform from curated sources" is a very easy requirement to meet.
