No disrespect for the author as he is twice as experienced as me. I am just entering that zone where ageism might start playing a role in whether I will be hired in the future or not. However, to me, his advice seemed to be just "Be a good slave, and you will always be a slave" with a little bit of "So good that they can't ignore you" from Cal Newport thrown in.
- zug_zug 5y agoYeah, I'm in the same boat. What's the big deal about getting fired exactly? From what I've heard, tech recruiters consider > 4 year stay at a company a red flag that you have gotten "too cozy" and stagnated into hardened habits and old tech, and personally I don't think they're wrong. Maybe things will change when I'm older, but for now I've found that being fired has usually actually been a net financial positive and a net career positive (you make 30% more and take 2 months of no pay, usually a better known company). Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm thinking a 45-year-old who has a 3-year-stint at FAANG, a 3-year-job at a startup, 4-years-at-big-co is going to be infinitely more employable than 16-years at Noname Inc.
