- theelous3 5y agoFew startups flourish anywhere. Or are you saying that all things being equal, a startup in europe has a lower chance of succeeding long term than in the us? Any data to back this claim?
- lmm 5y agoThere's a distinct lack of mega-successes coming out of Europe.
- karl-j 5y agoFrom the article the difference doesn’t seem that huge: Stockholm - 0.8 unicorns per 100,000 Silicon Valley - 1.4 unicorns per 100,000
- lovemenot 5y agoUnicorn is just a threshold. Of those in both regions that crossed it, how many went through the next, then the next order of magnitude?
- cinntaile 5y agoThat's almost double in SV, that's pretty huge.
- theelous3 5y agoGiven the differences in available capital and labour forces, reads more like stockholm is performing like an order of magnitude better. I'd also be interested in seeing long term outcomes. I'd wager stockholms is stronger.
- dmitriid 5y agoIn Silicon Valley terms a Unicorn is a company that can burn through 0.5-2.5 billion dollars a year for an unlimited number of years. Silicon Valley has very few "unicorns" beyond those.
- notfromhere 5y agoI don’t know if that’s a good success metric. Feel like a lot of smaller, but revenue sustainable startups would be better for economic health than one mega-Corp crushing competition

- dukeyukey 5y ago> Few startups flourish in Europe. Well, after the US and China, the UK is the next biggest tech/startup environment worldwide. Startups obviously do flourish at least in parts of Europe, even relative to the rest of the rich world (Japan, Korea, Russia kinda, the Gulf states, even Australia/Canada).
- dmitriid 5y agoRemove startups that burn through literally billions of dollars of unlimited VC money... and how many flourishing startups do you have left in the US? BTW here's a look at Y Combinator's bestest startups: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27485360 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27485360 (full thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27482589 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27482589)
