taxis don't have to be expensive. yeah, in NY and other US cities they're due to artificial constraints. currently, in Taipei TW. taxis dirt cheap. one thing that helps is public transport is everywhere and hence taxis have to be compete. so yeah, for taxis to be available cheaply, public transit has to be everywhere which we know in the US won't happen due to suburban sprawl.
