Philipson served as the Acting Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Trump administration. He holds the Daniel Levin Chair in Public Policy at the University of Chicago and was previously director of the Gary Becker Milton Friedman Institute for Research in Economics. While Acting Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, Philipson downplayed the public health risk and economic threat of the coronavirus pandemic, going so far as to question the wearing of masks to slow transmission of the disease.
