Bitcoin cannot go green, it's designed to be as wasteful as possible.
If I own a polluting coal plant mining coins and suddenly get my hands on an equivalent amount of green wind energy, why would I switch off the coal plant when I could keep polluting and generate double the hashes?
Any crypto using PoW should just be banned, any nuclear/renewable energy they used can be used to displace fossil fuels used by other processes.
- patrickthebold 5y agoA carbon tax is more reasonable than a ban. There's plenty of things that generate CO2 that have questionable value. It's much simpler to try to price in the externalities, than legislate value judgments.
- bcrl 5y agoIn the real world that doesn't work. Instead, miners will just move their equipment to locales where the cost of the externalities is unregulated and therefore omitted. Sadly, one of the core flaws of capitalism, not that we have anything much better as an option.
