Is it possible to disable Proton UI on this version? If it is, I cannot find out how, and now my browser is fully Proton-ized.
EDIT: Is is at least possible to add some sort of tab border? The lack of contrast between tabs was the reason I had disabled Proton.
- worble 5y agoProbably not, your best bet is to shore up the damage with userChrome.css https://github.com/black7375/Firefox-UI-Fix https://github.com/black7375/Firefox-UI-Fix is a really good set of styles to make proton usable (borders, icons, less padding, etc).
- ddek 5y agoNo, the ability to disable proton was removed a while ago. Or maybe in this release. I'm on FF-developer, which is ahead a bit.
- viseztrance 5y agoFor what is worth, I have disabled it in firefox 90 in about:config.
- jffry 5y agoI did as well; Firefox 91 no longer has that option. You'll be Proton-ified if you upgrade.
- ddek 5y agoI do too, but for about a month or so I've had proton anyway. I use FF developer so I'm a bit ahead of everyone else. You can fix it with some userChrome.css changes. I'm scared to touch it for fear of fucking my 'tabs on the bottom' css.
- conradfr 5y agoIf it's not, it will the first Firefox version I wont upgrade to, before changing to Chrome, probably. I've been a user since the Netscape Communicator days. Well OK, I'll probably try some userChrome stuff before really switching. But the new tabs are really unusable on my computer.
- moonshinefe 5y agoI just had the same question and looked into it. The answer is no you can't, they removed the ability to disable Proton as of version 91. I also strongly dislike the new tabs as they're totally disconnected from the actual pages they're a tab for with whitespace, less contrast as you mention as well which an issue if you don't have great eyesight. I guess they're willing to lose even more market share over this, which seems pretty silly considering what their trajectory has been...
- detritus 5y agoThis has made me genuinely very irritated. They take up so much space now! Why the f- do Mozilla insist upon making these fundamental but completely pointless changes? I have this software staring me in the face ALL the time, I don't need tab functionality being so large and distinct. I've not been bothered by a lot of UI changes as each update has allowed them to be reverted quite easily. It seems that every update has me swearing for 15 minutes until someone on HN helpfully points to a solution, but not this time. GRR.
- Old_Thrashbarg 5y agoYeah, the new tabs are a bit of a waste of real estate.
- yosamino 5y agoCome join us over here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1704347 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1704347 I can't distinguish the current tab anymore as well if lighting conditions are less than perfect or if I sit at an angle from the screen. Or here, same issue, 19 years ago https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173667 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173667 (I get that things change, I just thought it was funny)
- Bluecobra 5y agoThank you so much for posting this. This makes Firefox usable again for me. Not sure what they were thinking with these floating tabs.
- ikomrad 5y agoNo. I downgraded to 89, but you could also downgrade to 90 and still disable proton. You can use policies.json to stop Firefox from nagging you to update Firefox.x
