Personally theorize that orcas have recognized they are in direct conflict with humans for resources (food supply) and reacting. Decades ago a pod might have recognized a shipping trolley as a nuisance and avoided it. But in modern times, with many more vessels in the waters, it doesn't make sense to single out one. Any vessel is now a threat.
Alternatively the pod could have witnessed/experienced a traumatic event that impacted them. Now they are retaliating.
I'm no expert in the field but have a huge respect for other animals.
