I've played on custom taller maps and they become more useful when exploring expansive cave systems. You walked all the way down for the resources but have too much to carry. So minecarts become useful for the very tall stairs you have to climb up and down a lot. I think they'll become way more useful with the 64 more blocks' height underground.
