Most of the comments ignore that this is likely to be well received by many consumers, because it sounds good on the surface: Apple is using tech magic to fight bad guys. Hooray!
Worse, it’s nearly impossible for a competitor to market against without risking the general population believing you tacitly approve CSAM. How does Google market Android without coming across like a safe haven for pedophilia?

- asteroidbelt 5y agoIt's hard to predict what will consumers think. It will be enough to have one big scandal with police crashing into innocent person house after they shared a photo of their child on the beach with their close relatives to change public opinion of this feature. Even from business perspective Apple is playing very risky game here. It can backfire. Also let's keep in mind that iPhones are usually owned by higher income more educated left-leaning people. And have a look how MSM (which is generally left-leaning) writes about this feature. For example, Guardian here https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/aug/07/week-in-patriarchy-apple-privacy https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/aug/07/week-i... "Privacy. That’s (no longer) iPhone." Such coverage of Apple may result in people switching away from iPhones, or for example, switching to Google for photo storage, and switching further away from iMessage. It is very unclear how events will unfold.
- wccrawford 5y agoIn an era with so many people screaming, "Defund the police!" I can't see how reporting more stuff to the police automatically is going to go over well PR-wise. Even before that phrase, we were already in era of "Don't talk to the cops without your lawyer, especially if you're innocent." Giving those same cops more information is not in your own best interest.
- qeternity 5y ago> In an era with so many people screaming, "Defund the police!" This is a very vocal, very small minority. The most ardent police reformers I know believe that law enforcement is necessary. Defunding has devastating consequences on those who are most vulnerable.
- dagmx 5y ago"Defund the Police" is a terrible slogan but your take on it is inaccurate. It's not about removing law enforcement, it's about repatriating the excessive funds that have gone towards aggressive militarization of the police....and putting it towards other social care workers who are trained and better suited to serving the most vulnerable. It's not about abolishment, it's about reform and restructuring to better support society
