On one hand masks are an easy way to reduce the transmission of pathogens. On the other hand there are legitimate scientific & public health concerns regarding mass enforcement of nonpharmaceutical interventions such as lockdowns, masks, etc [1]. It's really not clear that mask mandates will be a net win for society if we begin to see the predictions in [1] play out - we'll just have to see how bad the flu season is in the coming winters.
