There is one particular thing I don’t understand about this Apple policy:
You can buy a SIM card and send images to your enemies/competitors through WhatsApp, and these images automatically gets downloaded to iPhone and potentially uploaded to iCloud.
What precautions are Apple taking against such actions? Or will it be some kind of exploitable implementation where you can easily swat any person you want and let them go to courts to prove their innocence?
- celeritascelery 5y agoI know of no messaging app the “automatically” uploads to iCloud. And what sort of idiot would try and send CP using a messenger app (almost all of which CASM detection). That’s like trying to smuggle drugs past the TSA so you can put them in someone’s house to frame them.
- vmladenov 5y agoThe app doesn’t. The iOS camera roll uploads newly captured or saved images when it connects to Wi-Fi.
- celeritascelery 5y agoIf you choose to save it, then you no longer a “victim”. But someone else can’t force a save to iCloud on your device.
- vmladenov 5y agoSure, but some apps allow you to choose once and henceforth save all photos sent to you. That provides a vector for someone to inject things into your iCloud. However, I find this risk exaggerated because if someone actually does this, you can just block the app’s ability to access your camera roll in the privacy settings or stop using the app. And report the user to the service, of course.
- kilroy123 5y agoWhatsApp automatically saves images to the phone, which automatically get uploaded. So yes, it does work this way. It does on my iPhone.
- vanilla_nut 5y agoFunnily enough, iMessage is also adopting this as a (default on!) option in iOS 15. Which is also where the anti-CP "feature" drops...
