Divorce Lawyer: Facebook Is a Cheating Machine
- Bostonian 5y agoInteresting article, and I bet that Facebook has enabled affairs leading to divorces. But a divorce lawyer won't be seeing people whose Facebook use did not mess up their personal lives.
- gamechangr 5y ago> If I had a dollar for every divorce caused by infidelity that started on Facebook, I would have… well, just about the same amount of money I have. I believe he means to imply that nearly all the cases of divorce he is seeing at his practice started online. I’m sure there are millions of FB users that aren’t heading to a divorce. In some ways though , there is no way to verify how bad it is (or isn’t ), which is why a top divorce lawyers word for it has value.
- mateo411 5y agoI think you could measure it. You could estimate or determine the percentage of marriages that end in divorce every year. You could to control for other factors such as recessions and see if the percentage of divorces is greater after 2009/2010 when Facebook became popular.

- jka 5y agoIt'd be easier for Facebook themselves to estimate, because they have the affected set per-country (userbase), and they know the baseline per country (published national statistics - both users and non-users). They've probably done that research, and they probably also know whether people engaging in affairs are more or less likely to increase engagement with the platform and click on related targeted ads and make relationship-relevant (or whatever the internal terminology is) purchases. Whatever the results, they can forge a kind of internally-consistent worldview. "This is what we've seen about our users, so this is what we think and will say humans are like naturally to avoid cognitive dissonance in the ranks and ourselves"
- jka 5y ago(they'd also probably have the data to know whether or not those relationships last, now that I think about it)
- yann2 5y ago> Don’t put the future in jeopardy just to indulge in some frivolous nostalgia Well the future for most people isnt too exciting. And most people have no clue what to do about it. Telling them to stay away from facebook, sex, food, alcohol, drugs, gambling, netflix, hn or whatever half baked shortlived reward they find is not enough. They must be sold Faith and learn the ways of generating it. Faith in what? Faith that tomorrow will be a better day. This is only possible if you spend a lot of time reminding yourself of the moments in life that have generated such faith in you or when you have generated such faith in others. The more entries you have in that list the easier it gets.
- hungryforcodes 5y agoGetting married is where the problem begins. Facebook is just any number of avenues by which the problem may eventually resolve itself. Alot of people prefer Tinder or Badoo.
