How do transistors work? Like a flush toilet
- ktpsns 5y agoAnalogies such as this one are gold.
- SavantIdiot 5y agoIt is a pretty bad analogy that breaks even while he's trying to explain it. He describes a transistor as two back to back valves. Then he describes the operation as "...some water could be injected in the middle so that its pressure is sufficient to open the upper valve, but not sufficient to open the lower one. In this way, the system allows water to flow only when a sufficient amount of water falls from the top to the middle..." There's no practical valve on earth that works that way, so now we need to an analogy to explain his dumb valve. It's so awful. Then he says an amplifier is like ... a flush toilet? When you pull the lever, you get one max-amplitude pulse. That's not an amplifier, that's a fire-detector test button. I cannot believe this guy is a physics professor.
