Also I like the high quality graphic with question marks made of "data" over floating viruses. S u b t l e.
- graderjs 5y agoYour commentary is no doubt appreciated. Over the last few years the "production values" and quality of the GT website has markedly improved. They've always been knocking it out of the park rhetorically, tho... particularly the editorial pieces which are I guess all penned by Hu Xijin. It's up there with, or better than, RT, in terms of counter-narrative sophistication juxtaposed to the predominant Western takes on current events. I wonder about their future...are they destined to become a widely distributed and consumed part of China's soft power? Or sort of a fringe (in the overseas market) hard-line paper with a finger on the pulse of the Central Government? I sort of feel sorry for China with not yet being able to have a flagship international masthead widely consumed by overseas audiences. CNN is still the absolute unrivaled ruler in terms of mainstream media soft power projection. As the (nearly) largest country economically, China probably needs to up this game. I wonder how that will play out? Perhaps not through traditional "news mediums" at least at first... edit: Final thought: heh, I suppose as long as the conversation is about the paper/outlet itself, rather than the story, a news outlet cannot claim to really project soft power, as they are not really participants in the 'liquid market' of narratives, until their particular brand becomes invisible/gets out of its own way in favor of the content/take/narrative they're publishing.
