- d3nj4l 5y agoThat's a lot of substacks to pay for, I can easily see that touching $50/mo on substack itself. Do you feel that amount of money justifies what you get?
- busymom0 5y agoSorry, I should have clarified that I am a paid subscriber to Glenn Greenwald, Matt Taibbi, Michael Tracey, Bari Weiss. The others are free subscriptions. Also I am a paid subscriber of Viva Frei/Robert Barnes Locals page as well as Steven Crowder's Mug Club. All the substacks are around $6.50 each per month and the Locals page is also $6.50 per month (all Canadian dollars). The mug club is an annual subscription which if I remember right was around $100 CAD. I think it all adds up to around $500 annual which I am okay with. I watch several hours worth of content from Viva Frei/Robert Barnes & Crowder each week and all the substacks I pay for are independent journalists from mixed political viewpoints which I definitely love supporting. I do wish Substack would offer bundled subscriptions for cheaper as that can add up pretty quick. But I don't pay for any corporate media nor do I pay for Netflix/YouTube/Spotify/Apple Music etc. So I think I get more than my money's worth.
- waspight 5y agoI might have been living under a rock, but I have never heard of Substack before. What is the difference from Medium, and does it receive less hate as a platform? Seems to have a similar payment model that Medium has gotten a lot of criticism for.
- busymom0 5y agoThey probably are quite similar. I never paid for anything on Medium though and usually clicked away as soon as they showed me their forced sign up page. It's not exactly the platform which I like here (Substack). It's the content by the people I subscribe to which I like. If they moved to another paid platform in future, I would follow them. Last year I stopped following corporate media and decided to put my money where I really wanted to support, so I went with the substacks of these independent journalists/commentators I value. When Glenn Greenwald resigned from The Intercept, that was what finally got me to start paying for people I wanted to support.
