At least as of 2016, a chat app was used as an example of a Cassandra-backed application in multiple sessions at Cassandra Summit. As in, it was used to talk about how one would implement various features using Cassandra - I don’t recall any released chat apps talking about their experience using Cassandra. Cassandra should, as noted in the article, work quite well for write-only data that’s always queried by a known set of keys (say, channel or user name), which matches the basic usage patterns of a chat app pretty well.
