My personal experience has been that I need a referral from my primary physician before I can get physical therapy covered under my insurance. So far, when I express to my physician my interest in PT they are happy to provide the referral. That said, the idea that PT may be more effective than medication or surgery is kind of new to me. People may need to be informed that PT is a possible solution for a some pain, especially those a physician may find difficult to diagnose.
