  I use the Basic 1CPU/2GB RAM/5GB SSD instance, $10/mo on the DO price page. If you can turn your instance off when you're not using it that tells me it doesn't have any load other than you remoting into it. Why not start with the smallest instance and see if you max it out? Developing remotely over SSH the network latency is a bigger drag than not enough CPUs or RAM, but it depends on what you're doing. If you're running a business hosting and domain registration and all that are deductible business expenses anyway. Seems like a very small amount to worry about even if you need the $40/mo VPS.
