Ask HN: Best VPS provider for remote development?
I tried Digital Ocean so far, but in order to save some money I want to be able to disable the VM for a night for example. But with DO you need to 1) create a snapshot 2) destroy the droplet 3) recreate the droplet (and choose the configuration (num of cores, ram, etc)) when you need the VM again. Tedious. What do you use? Thanks.
- gregjor 5y agoI run a VPS at Digital Ocean 24/7 for $10/mo, plus $2/mo for backups. How much cheaper do you want? Is your time hassling over a few dollars worth it?
- white_box 5y agoThanks for the reply. What config do you have? If I would be able to just toggle on/off then there would be not time hassling. I tried to run 40 usd config so far
- gregjor 5y agoI use the Basic 1CPU/2GB RAM/5GB SSD instance, $10/mo on the DO price page. If you can turn your instance off when you're not using it that tells me it doesn't have any load other than you remoting into it. Why not start with the smallest instance and see if you max it out? Developing remotely over SSH the network latency is a bigger drag than not enough CPUs or RAM, but it depends on what you're doing. If you're running a business hosting and domain registration and all that are deductible business expenses anyway. Seems like a very small amount to worry about even if you need the $40/mo VPS.
- prirun 5y agoI have run the HashBackup upgrade server for years on a $5/mo Linode VM, and also have a dirt-cheap testing VM on Vultr that has been very reliable. The main thing I don't like about DO is when I tried them years ago, they used a zillion different 3rd-party web services for their site, making it hard to use with NoScript.
