Apple Discusses “Screeching Voices of the Minority” in Internal Memos
- literallyaduck 5y agoRather than engaging in civil discourse they will drown out the dissenters voices with their platforms.
- mint2 5y agoI haven’t been decided on the update Apple is making, but my opinion on that aside. Whoever used that terminology about concerned users needs fired ASAP because it indicates a toxic culture and attitude. If this was a first incident for the person and they’d literally stayed up 24 hrs, then maybe they could stay if they sincerely worked hard at showing they understood why their actions were harmful to both Apple and its customers.
- BitwiseFool 5y ago"We know that the days to come will be filled with the screeching voices of the minority. Our voices will be louder." This is just dripping with contempt. They can't even be bothered to use 'diplomatic' verbiage.
- ksec 5y agoApple has had this we are righteous attitude for quite a long time. Somewhere along the line, Steve Jobs' last message to Apple to do the right thing has taken them into this direction. Without some sort of self reflection ( which they dont have ), it wont change. And this email is showing.
- drenvuk 5y agothey can't be argued with if they don't engage in civil discourse. the only option is to replace them with someone who will or remove their ability to affect the world in any meaningful way.
- snowwrestler 5y ago> Marita Rodriguez, executive director of strategic partnerships at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which Apple is working closely with on the scanning feature, sent a memo to the Apple employees working on this feature encouraging them to disregard concerns about the implications of this feature: > “I know it’s been a long day and that many of you probably haven’t slept in 24 hours. We know that the days to come will be filled with the screeching voices of the minority. > “Our voices will be louder.” An external person put a phrase in one email they sent to some Apple employees. Hardly “Apple Discusses”. The headline seems like pretty obvious clickbait.
- drenvuk 5y agoI'll take the bait, these people are working towards a common misguided goal. why separate them?
- uncomputation 5y agoTo me, the tone of the emails implies there is some internal disagreement and this is more of a top-down mandate with the code monkeys having to pull all-nighters for something they may not agree with. Unless you expect the people implementing this to quit on moral grounds which seems unfair. It’s also worth noting the non-Apple representative (whose interests closely aligning with this godforsaken “feature”) has a much more contemptuous, hard-lined tone than the actual Apple VP.

- bangonkeyboard 5y agoThe external note was attached to a team memo from Apple VP Sebastien Marineau-Mes, who introduced it with: "I wanted to share this note that we received today from NCMEC. I found it incredibly motivating, and hope that you will as well."
- RenThraysk 5y agoSays more about the person sending the memo, than anyone else. And doesn't inspire confidence in their abilities.
