I've had the displeasure of talking to people who honestly think just being part of the police automatically makes one a bad person who deserves physical harm.
It says right in the article that this new law targets those who "harass, menace, assault or injure an individual due to such individual's status as a first responder.", which is in no way the same as "criticizing".
The article itself isn't even all that bad, but that title really destroys its credibility.

Unfortunately, being a cop automatically makes you a liar as part of the job: - in most areas, lying to suspects is allowed, both on the street and in the station - most DV cases require a cop to arrest somebody, even when they see no reason or evidence to do so - if your partner does something illegal, the probability is low that you'll say anything - cops have standard lies like, "We stopped you because you look like a wanted poster at our station", etc. - parallel construction (via Stingray, etc.) means you have to lie where the evidence actually came from - snitches will say anything to get out of jail free, yet their "testilying" is used. It doesn't take long for people who lie on a daily basis to turn you into a "bad person." (Marxism/Communism twists people in the same way - when truth is relative to party goals, that's the end of objective truth.)
