I don't much about it either until I started bit banging old gaming console controller protocols with an Arduino and other microcontrollers. Here it becomes necessary since you don't have a whole lot of processing power available for the lower level Arduinos and I use a hell don't know Atmega assembly to help speed things along. Since learning there I have only used xor in a JavaScript frontend I wrote because I can. Otherwise I would have just used an if state to check for 1 and then change it to 0 and vice versa.
