Can somebody please explain what the big issue here is? I thought this only applies to iMessage and there are many other possibilities available to communicate securely.
- Zelphyr 5y agoThey are also scanning iCloud documents to match photos against known child abuse photos and reporting any that they find to law enforcement as well as locking you out of your iCloud account.
- kyralis 5y agoNo, they're potentially reporting after some high threshold of matches. They explicitly say that individual matches do not reach that bar, although they do not actually say what "high" is other than the statistical claim.
- smnrchrds 5y agoThey have created and implemented the technology to scan your personal phone for specific documents from a government database and alert the authorities if matches are found. If you don't consider this an issue, you trust your government way too much.
- joshstrange 5y agoThat is not true, they are only scanning photos uploaded to iCloud against the database. The only on-device things being done are detecting nudity in iMessage for minors and alerting the minor/parent. Also something about Siri and detecting searches for CSAM content. Edit: Minor correction, the scanning on your photos does happen on-device but only if you are going to upload it to iCloud.
- smnrchrds 5y agoSo they have implemented the technology. Scanning for photos not being uploaded to iCloud and/or non-photo documents will be a matter of flipping a switch. I am willing to bet serious money that the switch will get flipped sooner rather than later. Perhaps with a facade of government forcing them to do so, so Apple won't look like a bad guy. But in any case, it will get flipped.
- joshstrange 5y agoI'm not disagreeing or arguing that I don't worry about a similar thing happening. All I'm saying is your original comment is not currently the truth. I'm all for talking about the slippery slope but it's important to be truthful in what we are talking about. You stated "They have created and implemented the technology to scan your personal phone for specific documents from a government database and alert the authorities if matches are found.", that is not true. They only scan photos and only photos that are being uploaded to iCloud. Do I worry they might flip that switch and do more than photos and/or scan them even if you don't upload them? Sure but the truth matters and at this point in time they aren't doing that. Again, in an attempt to ward off some replies, I'm not saying I agree with this move or that I'm happy with it, I just dislike things being stated as facts when that's not the case.
- smnrchrds 5y agoI meant implemented as written the program for. I fully believe they have implemented the feature, just not enabled it yet.
