Used to be while he was actually in China. Apparently he had some trouble with the authorities, falling on the wrong side of some rules that apply to journalists, and left the country in a hurry. After that it seems that he found that he could get more clicks/money with sensationalists anti-China content. Not nearly as good as his prior content.
