I know that it's the manipulation of binary numbers, and I do know what binary numbers are. But I've never operated on binary numbers professionally. I did do some AND OR NOR NOT XOR gate diagrams in high school and college, but haven't looked at binary numbers or thought in binary numbers since then.
- AnIdiotOnTheNet 5y agoOk, so it isn't as though you weren't exposed to the concept at least. The way you phrased what you said made it sound like boolean logic itself might be alien to you. Still, there's such a tiny conceptual distance from the gates to bitwise operators that I'm still a bit surprised you didn't acquire it by osmosis.
- sudhirj 5y agoThe Boolean logic part is applicable everywhere, so that's actually unrelated to binary arithmetic or bit-shifting. Stuff like Demorgan's theorem etc I practice more in the context of simplifying if-else statements than binary operations. So there hasn't been enough significant overlap to spread into.
