If I’m not mistaken, rms didn’t even get canned for comments about Epstein. He was responding to discussions about Minsky’s role and the ethical questions involved. I found it remarkable that Reif got away with ‘that’s my signature but I don’t remember signing it’ and yet the institute let rms take the full brunt of his cancellation. (To your point, maybe I was not astonished but I was certainly disappointed.) They basically fired (forcibly resigned) the guy for talking.
