I've used to use them as an OAuth provider for a different service. Now it's not worth the effort. They are also needed to use Android hardware with a functional store. Unfortunately those things are tied too much together. I can't say I blame them for doing that, although I'd appreciate them having different measures against truly mass account creation compared to my very humble manual work.
