I’m not pretending to know the intent of the company, but what the company ought to do from a technical ideology perspective, and why they ought to do in a practical tech business context aren’t necessarily equivalent.
Admonishing a company for - based on legal notice alone - not using some particular technical approach is unreasonable because it doesn’t consider the practical implications of doing so (systems complexity, data transfer, how good is the downstream software and what sort of preprocessing happens, tech debt and time to market, etc.)
At the end of the day, maybe they are generating training data sets, and if so, don’t use it if that bothers you. If there was evidence of them selling data, that would be something to sound the alarm over, but if it’s just some text a lawyer or ops person wrote, that’s a lot of extrapolation.
- rognjen 5y agoWhile I understand what you mean, I do think it's important to talk about this so that the ideology and business converge. If everyone is just fine with everything business will just keep pushing. > maybe they are generating training data sets And they aren't telling their users that they are which I disagree with. > evidence of them selling data I think there are many more cases of data being sold that we don't know about and that alarms are not raised about. They do say that they're allowed to if they wish though, which I disagree with. > Admonishing I genuinely did not mean to sound like I'm admonishing and if you have specific instances of where it sounds too harsh please let me know and I'll change them.
- engmgrmgr 5y agoYour entire post is an admonishment. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to post at all, but I also don’t agree with it. Why not reach out to them directly and ask them?
- rognjen 5y agoFair enough. I considered emailing them, but it would have just been this post in email form. What do you think I should have asked them?
