Off-grid New Hampshire man jailed for refusing to vacate cabin of 27 years
- anigbrowl 5y agoI don't know laws in New Hampshire, but I'd be very surprised if a lawyer couldn't claim his long occupation constitutes a protectable easement. The idea that if a squatter or transient who makes use of another's property over time eventually gains some protectable rights is an old one in law. The problem here is that the man is not represented by a lawyer, so in a purely adversarial legal system he is treated like crap and jailed rather than having a jurist examine the possible scope of his rights. There's no entitlement to a public defender in civil litigation, so that presumably extends to the contempt decision. Pretty disgusting, frankly.
