Facebook Cannot Justify Its Opposition To Accountability

  Neither can Google, Apple, Microsoft or Amazon. These "trust us" approaches are not sustainable.

  Of course they can't, but do they need to? In a perfect world, perhaps they should be transparent with regards to accountability, but their behavior isn't going to change as long as they're making money and no one at the company is at risk of any jail time. In this case, jail time doesn't seem to be warranted, and what they did more or less protected the people paying them. I don't think this will generate enough negative press to make the platform less attractive to advertisers, either.
