I believe it happens, I see the frayed cables everywhere, but the MagSafe charger from my 2009 MacBook and the lightning cable that came with my iPhone 5 in 2012 are still perfectly fine and sees regular use in my car. The strain relief on these cables is practically nonexistent, so I won't put the blame squarely on abusive users.
