I've run a Linode-hosted Mattermost server for four or five years now, mostly so that my brother and I can chat over multiple topics and projects. No regrets. Low maintenance. It's been mostly free of hiccups of any sort. Occasionally it crashes, but I haven't been curious enough to figure out if it is something I can fix.
