Australian Citizen is told that he wasn't a citizen when renewing his passport
- YPPH 5y agoInteresting comment at the bottom of the judgment* >In these circumstances, it may well be that Mr Lee’s case is one which warrants consideration by the Commonwealth of the making of an Act of Grace payment to him. * https://www.judgments.fedcourt.gov.au/judgments/Judgments/fca/full/2021/2021fcafc0089 https://www.judgments.fedcourt.gov.au/judgments/Judgments/fc...
- rswail 5y agoThat's sort of the closest the Judges can say to "Pay up you bastards for not fixing this yourselves and putting this person through this bullshit."
- forinti 5y agoThey should have given him a temporary passport while the matter was better analysed. It's easy to guess how much damage you can do to someone's life if you leave them stateless.
- redis_mlc 5y agoIn the US, one can run into very serious (life altering) problems with: - E-Verify - missing/unaccepted parish birth records - stolen identities.
- shakna 5y ago> After the Federal Court ruled Troy was in fact an Australian citizen in 2019, The Department of Home Affairs appealed. It still claimed he was an “immigrant” and should not have the Australian citizenship he had held for more than 40 years. The Department was not acting in good faith, expecting them to provide any accommodation is unrealistic.
- Walf 5y agoSadly, this isn't even slightly surprising. The conservative party currently holding federal power, here are lead by religious zealots who don't practise their own teachings of compassion. It very common to see minorities mistreated and demonised in order to distract the populace from increasingly Orwellian "security" and "safety" measures, and blatant corruption is rife.
- mmarq 5y agoI’m wondering what have we gained from all the recent chattering on blocking immigration. For the questionable gain of making it impossible for an African or for an Asian to move to a western country legally, we have created overpowered border-line criminal immigration offices (outright nazi-style criminal in this particular case), whose only purpose is to pester foreign residents and even our fellow countrymen, depending on the melamine content of their skin or the weirdness of their names.
- akomtu 5y agoWhy do clubs have mean bouncers?
- robertwt7 5y agoThe fact that this is even happening in AU is pretty sad. Imagine yourself in his position, wasting 3 years of your life because you’re accused by the government that you’re not citizen in your own country. Messed up, it’s messed up Pete
