For some reason, this does not seem work in real life.
It honestly seems like the vocal racists and bigots have a fundamental need to piss people off. If you go lurk on Gab, Parler, Rumble, etc you'll notice that a lot of the wind is taken out of these bigoted sails.
When deprived of an "other" to simultaneously attack and to claim to be victimized by, a lot of the conversations just fizzle out.
Much of the social media alt-right is not so much about discussing ideas as it is "engaging the enemy".

Isn’t that what smoldesu is actually thinking would be the solution: Let people form islands. Facebook actively amplifies antagonistic posts by showing them to more people and for longer. A federated system would presumably not do this and would give users more direct control of who they associated with.
