As the “contrarian” in the name gives away, this is a person that routinely will find themselves on the wrong end of a thought process.
In this case, the question is wrong, already: nobody is planning a solar-only grid. Better interconnects are among the top priorities and make arguments looking at just a single state seem silly. They will add wind to the power mix but, more importantly, increase geographic diversity leading to far more varied and therefore stable production.
After that, peak demand, which they identify as rare but important, can be changed drastically with a smarter grid. Defer charging electric cars, or even allow them to contribute back when needed, and you have vast and growing abilities to reduce spikes in demand or fluctuations in productions.
