This Elon cult narrative doesn’t make much sense to me. In SV, tech has been changing so rapidly that a “Chairman Steve” or “Chairman Bill” approach makes some sense. It provides the pointer-space continuity non-IT business types need to fit the orders-of-magnitude changes of IT into their brains. Even in IT, on either end of the expertise spectrum, nobody cared who ran the show, neither the gormless grandparent nor the IT researcher…at least not in my era.
A long-legacy, strict liability business like autos? Henry Ford was a long time ago. Iacocca was a US business hero, not a tech hero. Tens of millions of consumers have a deep hands-on experience base with autos, automotive tech changes much more slowly, we’ve moved away from the disposable era in cars, and bugs lead to actual bloody gory deaths you see on the news.
Those all argue against a celebrity CEO as a business requirement for autos, unless s/he is on-call to pick me up and tow my car if it fails. Star Trek teleports…that’s another story.
