Google's 'time crystals' could be one of the greatest scientific achievements
- MikeDelta 5y agoThe wikipedia on Time Crystals offers a more clear explanation using entropy and thermal equilibrium. Simply put, a crystal is matter that is symmetric along its lattice, which are discrete steps in space. A crystal will be like that forever if you leave it alone. A time crystal is symmetric in time, so moves between states constantly, and will do so forever if you leave it alone. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_crystal https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_crystal

- dangoljames 5y agoJust asking for a friend: what makes this such a great scientific achievement? of what practical use is it? Can it be used as a means to solve other 'hard' math problems? can it power a hyperdrive? a time machine? practically infinite energy without carbon entanglement? Please ELI5, even if I AM well in excess of 50.
