It's definitely something more common with non-x86 hardware, but at least on the H8SGL/H8DGU/H8DGi/X9D* motherboards I have from SuperMicro, there is an included RAS mode for RAM redundancy. The VMware "purple screen of death" due to DIMM failure is common enough in the production environments where I work, although not too common as to warrant actually enabling it. Nice to know the option's there though.
