Conversation about the .NET open source project
- infogulch 5y agoGlad that open-sourcing .NET Core has worked out for Microsoft and contributors. It's a good example of open sourcing a previously closed-source platform, and I hope that it can serve as a good example for other companies looking to do the same. Though, notably, .NET is not really a product itself, it's more complimentary to Microsoft's other products, Azure, Office, Windows, etc (and products from other companies to be fair). The conversation style post is interesting. On one hand it seems appropriate to ask the publicly visible maintainers about their experience developing in the open. On the other hand it seems somewhat empty to ask them "Describe the commitment to open source at Microsoft." because, while they do have visibility on the inside of the company which means something, opinions of individual maintainers don't rise to the level of a public statement by the company, and that conflation appears to be intentional. I wish they asked a question like "Describe a favorite or recent community contribution you would like to highlight."
