I've never been involved in any philosophy department, but those I know who are talk a fair amount about the high level of ad hominem attacks that occur during debates. It seems like the superiority complex is fairly ingrained in their discourse. While my friends find it somewhat strange, they say eventually you start to tune it out and listen to the other arguments.
