- throwawaysea 5y agoThanks for sharing the study - the original link just goes to a login screen for me. I haven't read the study fully but the main conclusion is that converting every light truck (SUV, pickup, minivan) in the country to a (smaller) car would save around 800 lives a year. That seems like a very small number in the grand scheme of things. The value of a life in the US used in mortality analyses is something like $7 million - which for 800 lives is $5.6B. The market for light trucks is far bigger than that - even just one model like the F-150 generates something like $50B in revenue a year. What this means is that people are deriving vastly more value from the presence of light trucks than the loss we see from them.
